Electrical LEDs are, in many ways, superior to incandescent bulbs.  They generate little to no heat, they last much longer, they consume less watt per lumen, and they light up and extenguish faster than incandescent.  We installed LEDs in place of the front corner markers, rear corner markers, rear tail/stop, reverse, high-mount brake, license plate, and throughout the interior.  Total cost was just under $200, but the advantages are crystal clear.  Never having to change the lightbulbs is nice, but safety is important, too.  LED tails will give someone tailgating us that few milliseconds of extra time to react to the Spirit decellerating rapidly.  The changeover also allows us to use other power-consuming items, such as a bigger sound system, without stressing the OEM generator when the lights are also on.

FWD 76-0408
air / ignition / fuel This computer replaces our stock computer.  It provides 14 psi boost, features revised spark and fuel curves, and modified wastegate tables for faster spool up. O2 feedback, active knock retard, increased rev limiter and over boost protection provided.  There are supposedly revised fan schedules for better cooling, but cooling appears unchanged.  FWDPerformance says it's great for use on stock or modified turbo 1 car, using stock or 804 injectors, stock map sensor, and stock or larger exhaust.  The cruise control function was retained, but acts slightly erratic, ''letting go'' of the cruise speed on occasion.  The installation of this part alone dropped nearly one full second from the Spirit's 1/4 mile time.

KNN
air / ignition / fuel This is the first time we'd replaced the air filter in the Spirit, and there was no way to know how long it had been before we owned it that it'd been replaced.  It was in pretty sorry shape, looking to be at least 25,000 miles old.  We dropped in a K&N Filtercharger replacement air filter.  We use K&N filters in all our vehicles, because they're washable, and flow better than stock.

P4876733
air / ignition / fuel This coil, made by MSD under the name Blaster 2, puts out 45,000 volts, 15k more than stock.  It also has an oil-filled chrome-coated metal canister, and fits the stock mounting bracket.  This is another mod in a series of better-than-stock replacements we're doing.  Nothing extreme here, just providing "insurance" that the car is running at peak performance.  We also installed a distributor cap and rotor along with it.

suspension Kumho says the ECSTA 711 is the High Performance "summer" tire member of their ECSTA family.  The 711 was developed to balance dry and wet road performance with value oriented pricing, putting them right in line with the goals of our Spirit.  They feature a directional design, with stable independent shoulder and intermediate tread blocks to provide dry road handling while a continuous center rib enhances handling, reduces noise, and helps promote even tread wear.  The 711s wide grooves should enhance wet traction and reduce risk of hydroplaning.  Steel belts are reinforced by nylon to provide high-speed integrity, while a polyester cord body enhances ride quality.  Styling is kept simple with subtle black letters.  These tires are "H" speed rated.  The old Goodyears that were on the car were 205/60, while these measure in at 215/55.  The alloy wheels are 6'' wide.
AA1 Tow Bracket Deyeme Racing
 Tow Bracket

DMR p/n AA1TowBkt
body / chassis Once again taking a look at the Spirits younger cousin, the Neon, we made a tow bracket for our Spirit.   The dimensions are slightly different, but it's constructed from 3/8" (10mm) thick tempered aluminum alloy, and installed with a titanium bolt, just like the Neon version.  Since we already make virtually the same part for the Neon, this is now a production part, p/n AA1TowBkt.  Many cars made today don't have a good place to attach a tow hook for emergency purposes, so this is a practical add-on, street or race.
AA1 Air Dam Deyeme Racing
 Air Dam

2003/12/01

DMR p/n AA1AirDam
body / chassis Looking back again to previous project cars, this time to the more closely related 1996 Neon.  This part is nearly identical in form and function to p/n PL1AirDam.  Construction is tempered aluminum alloy.   The air dam grabs air that would otherwise travel under the car, directing it instead up into the radiator/intercooler area, where it can do some good. Removing air from under the car increases aerodynamic efficiency, and improving cold air flow to the radiator and intercooler is always good.
AA1 Air Trap Deyeme Racing
 Air Trap

2003/11/01

DMR p/n AA1AirTrap
body / chassis Looking back at previous project cars, this part is similar in design to our ST-body front facia splash guard, but closer in function to our PL-body airdam.  This part, what we call an Air Trap, keeps air that flows through the front facia from going under the car, instead forcing it upward into the radiator. At the same time, air that is going under the facia anyway now has a slightly smoother underside to travel past.  More air for engine cooling = better performance, and more aerodynamic underside = better performance.  Our main method of monitoring this item will be fuel mileage.  We also plan to make an airdam, very similar to the PL1AirDam, to see how it compares to the AA1AirTrap.

OEM p/n 4490360
DMR p/n AA1RadBktB
body / chassis When you open the hood of our Spirit, this will likely be the first thing you see.  The Deyeme Racing hood latch bracket is made from 0.050" thick tempered aluminum alloy, and is mounted with 7075 anodized aluminum bolts and washers.  The aluminum parts are much lighter than stock, will never rust, and have a much classier look to them.  This part was made a limited edition production part 2003/11/01, available with choice of bolt colour.  We chose red bolts and washers on our own car to go with the body colour.
